With some of the biggest and most committing climbs in all of Colorado this is the place to be for adventure ice climbs. Far away from the ice park crowds these routes have a deservedly more serious air to them.
More experienced climbers looking to push themselves will find a variety of climbs. With just enough traffic to keep the trail breaking to a minimum these are some of the first climbs to appear in the San Juan mountains.
While there are many classic ice climbs in a spectacular setting there are also a handful of moderate climbs and a little bit of single pitch for those who may just be learning to ice climb. With this location in the midst of some of the best ice climbing in North America this is the perfect place to enjoy an adventure and when mid winter conditions call for a storm we also offer backcountry skiing in the area.
Ice Climbing in the Eureka/Silverton area usually starts in mid to late November and lasts frequently til late April. To avoid hazardous avalanche conditions early season ice and late season ice can be prefered for the backcountry.

Silverton is a small town located on US 550 between Durango and Ouray. While flights are available to Durango and Montrose which connect from Denver most people fly into Grand Junction and drive a few hours.
This is home to some of the best ice climbs in Colorado. These are serious climbing objectives with significant approaches, serious avalanche hazards, and sometimes fickle conditions.
Climb Name | Climb Description | |
---|---|---|
Stairway to Heaven (WI4, 7 pitches) | While the approach is only about an hour or less it's well worth it for one of the biggest moderate climbs in the state. With consistent difficulty and comfortable belay stances it's a classic for a reason. | |
Whorehouse Hoses (WI4/5, 3 pitches) | Not far from the parking area this climb hides most of the enjoyable climbing in the San Juans that gives an isolated feel. With a couple variations near the top and very long pitches this is an excellent outing without as much committment. | |
Hoser's Highway (WI5, 4 pitches) | Not far beyond Stairway to Heaven this is just a bit shorter and a bit more difficult for those who are looking to try some of the more challenging routes in the area. |
